Heute gibts keine schönen Bilder. Den Bäumen gehts nicht gut. Das Foto zeigt die Bäume auf der Nordseite des Hauses, in dem ich eine Wohnung gemietet habe. Bäume in
diesem Zustand habe ich bei uns zuletzt in den 80er Jahren des letzten Jahrhunderts gesehen, als wir sie mit dem Dreck, den wir in die Luft entliessen, den Abgasen, mit saurem Regen bedrohten.
Und ich erinnere mich noch sehr gut an die Bilder von Wäldern im Osten, der damaligen Tschechoslowakei z.B. Viele Quadratkilometer weit ragten nur noch Baumskelette in die Höhe.
Damals hat mensch bei uns relativ rasch reagiert. Die Katalysatortechnik wurde vorangetrieben. Auf manchen Autobahnabschnitten um Städte herum wurde eine Geschwindigkeitsbegrenzung von 90 km/h eingeführt. Stammt nicht auch die 120er-Beschränkung auf Schweizer Autobahnen aus dieser Zeit? Ich glaube ja. Die SBB erfand das Halbtax-Abo, so dass mehr Leute auf den Zug umstiegen, statt mit dem Auto zur Arbeit zu fahren.
Mir erschien es richtig, nicht nur von Umweltschutz zu reden, sondern auch zu handeln. Also verzichtete ich auf das Auto. Ich bin bisher - jetzt bin ich 63 - insgesamt etwa zehn Jahre Auto gefahren. Und zweimal eine Stunde lang geflogen. Und ja, ein bisschen bin ich stolz darauf, dass ich manchmal so unbarmherzig konsequent handle.
Natürlich gab es auch Leute, die sich lustig machten. Die fuhren mit Aufklebern herum, auf denen zu lesen war: "Mein Auto fährt auch ohne Wald." Ha. Ha. Ha. Jetzt freuen sich wahrscheinlich dieselben Gedankenlosen darüber, dass an den Frontscheiben ihrer SUVs keine Insekten mehr kleben.
Freundinnen erzählten mir schon 2003 von einer Insel vor Neuseeland, die evakuiert werden musste, weil das Meerwasser heraufdrückte und das Süsswasser verdrängte.
Einen Dok zu einer anderen, grösseren Insel im Pazifik (hab leider vergessen wo), sah ich vor ein paar Jahren schon. Die Menschen wurden ans Festland gebracht und lebten dort als unerwünschte
Eindringlinge. Dabei gehörten sie einfach zu den ersten "Klimaflüchtlingen".

There are no nice pictures today. The trees are not healthy. The photo shows the trees on the north side of the house where I rented an apartment. I last saw trees in this condition in the 80s of the last century, when we threatened them with the dirt that we blew up in the air, the exhaust fumes, with acid rain. And I still remember very well the pictures of forests in the East, then Czechoslovakia, for example. For many square kilometres only tree skeletons towered high.
At that time, humans in our region reacted relatively quickly. The catalyst technology was advanced. On some sections of motorway around cities, a speed limit of 90 km / h was introduced. Was the speed limit of 90 km/h on Swiss highways not also a consequence? I think so. The SBB invented the half-fare card, so that more people switched to the train instead of driving to work.
It seemed right to me not only to talk about environmental protection, but also to act. So I renounced the car. So far in my life I've been driving for about ten years - now I'm 63 years old. And flown twice for an hour. And yes, I am a little bit proud that sometimes I act so relentlessly consistently.
Of course, there were also people who made fun of themselves. They drove around with stickers saying, "My car is driving without a forest." Ha. Ha. Ha. The same thoughtless people are probably thrilled about seeing no longer insects sticking to the windshields of their SUVs.
Girlfriends told me in 2003 about an island off the coast of New Zealand, which had to be evacuated because the sea water pushed up and displaced the fresh water. A documentary to another, larger island in the Pacific (unfortunately forgot where), I saw a few years ago. The people were brought to the mainland and lived there as unwanted intruders. They were simply among the first "climate refugees".
People, what worried us in the 1980s, is a breeze to what's coming our way now.
